The Gregory Cup has served a number of functions, but since 1973 has been awarded to the winners of Division 2.

When the Gregory Cup was first donated, the league consisted of a
single division. It was used as the "second" trophy of the league,
awarded to the best performance over 10 boards.

The name of the winner for 1938–9 does not appear on the cup.
Evidently the outbreak of the Second World War disrupted the usual
arrangements for engraving it.
From 1939 to 1967 The league did not operate. From 1955 the cup was used as
a trophy for the SCCA annual jamboree.

On the 16th March 2020 the UK effectively entered Lockdown due to Covid and all remaining fixtures in the MSCL were cancelled with league winners announced based on results to date.
